Amazon Resists Handing Over Robot Witness

Online retail giant Amazon is resisting calls from Arkansas prosecutors to turn over an Amazon Echo – a digital device that works by voice control – that they say may contain information that could help solve a 2015 case. Amazon claims the authorities haven’t made the case that their investigation is more important than a customer’s privacy rights. The company wants prosecutors to prove that the information is not available elsewhere, and requested that the court review the Echo recordings before turning them over to authorities, to be sure they are relevant. “Given the important First Amendment and privacy implications at stake, the warrant should be quashed unless the Court finds that the State has met its heightened burden for compelled production of such materials,” Amazon wrote. Police have charged James Bates, with murder. Bates has pleaded not guilty. His home had numerous digital devices, and police say they want to check what, if anything, those devices may have recorded around the time of the murder.
