Are Harassment Hotlines Just Hokum?

In countering an onslaught of sexual harassment claims by former female employees, 21st Century Fox has pointed to an employee hotline set up more than 10 years ago. Former Fox anchor Bill O’Reilly, in his defense, pointed to the fact no employee has ever used the hotline to complain about him. But an article in the New York Times cites a number of accusers from Fox who say the company kept its hotline under wraps, and for practical purposes it did not exist. According to some plaintiff attorneys, that’s a common scenario. Another flaw in the system, they say, is that advertised “anonymity” is iffy, and retaliation is not uncommon. An attorney from Ogletree Deakins has some advice for employers who want to set up a reporting system that isn’t bogus.
