BP Caught Fudging Line Spacing To Max Court Filing Limit

Lawyers for BP got a sharp rebuke from District Court Judge Carl Barbier for adjusting the formatting of a filing to squeeze six extra pages into the court-mandated 35-page limit. “Counsel’s tactic would not be appropriate for a college term paper. It certainly is not appropriate here,” Barbier wrote in a Sept. 15 court order. Running afoul of the rules was especially risky in this case, as the court has already found that the British oil giant was reckless in operations, leading directly to the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil rig explosion and subsequent environmental disaster.
