Can USPTO Process Patent No. 10,000,000?

In the not-too-distant future, the USPTO will award its 10 millionth patent, necessitating an additional eighth digit to utility patent numbers. “Since the dawn of the computer age, computer systems have handled only seven digit patent numbers,” patent attorney Gene Quinn writes at IP Watchdog. “Without deliberate consideration and action moving to an eighth digit may not be a smooth transition.” Adding to the concern, the USPTO computer system is “widely known to be extremely fragile,” Quinn says.
