Chinese Cyber-Espionage Abates

Moves by the U.S., including indictments and the threat of economic sanctions, have led to a sharp decrease in instances of Chinese cyber-espionage since 2014, according to a new report by cybersecurity firm FireEye. That doesn’t mean the threats have eased, however. “The landscape we confront today is far more complex and diverse, less dominated by Chinese activity and increasingly populated by a range of other criminal and state actors,” the report reads. Though China is less active in cyber attacks, some of its focus appears to have shifted to other countries, including Taiwan, India, and Japan. Chinese President Xi Jinping pledged in September that his country would not engage in state-sponsored commercial cyber-espionage.
