Rawlins discuss “customer focused innovation” and some of the intellectual property issues that inevitably come with it. A related issue concerns the “big data” that makes a high degree of customer-focused innovation possible, because it can tell manufacturers in fine detail about the products their customers buy, and how and when they use them. However, the gathering and assembly of big data is an area where legal and regulatory issues are in flux, and caution is required. “Manufacturers must be aware that just because they can extract certain insights does mean they are entitled to or can use the results.”
