Despite PR Fiasco, Useful Management Lessons At Amazon

Amazon took a big PR hit recently from a New York Times exposé of facilities where pressure on workers sometimes bordered on abuse. But that’s not the whole story, writes Wendy Bernero from Bernero & Press, and law firms are among the organizations that could learn from Amazon’s extraordinary success at raising motivation and morale among its white collar workers. She says these employees are paid well, but money is not a primary factor. “The key elements of creating a high-performance culture,” Bernero writes, “are giving employees a strong sense of purpose, mastery and autonomy.” Amazon has proven extremely adept at doing that, and it’s a major factor in its recently outpacing Walmart to become the most valuable retailer in the country.
