Disguised Twitter Ads Getting FTC Attention

The FTC has settled  over allegations that tweets promoting Sony’s PlayStation Vita console, some of which came from an ad agency, were false and misleading. This is the first time the FTC has gone after a defendant for tweeting about a company without also disclosing its business ties, but it probably won’t be the last, writes Julian Hattem in The Hill. An FTC official says the agency will be paying particular attention to social media promotion of video games. In the Sony case, the FTC produced an email from an account executive who asked employees to generate buzz for the product with tweets, and even provided the hashtag. FTC guidelines suggest that if tweet writers are paid, they should acknowledgment it in the tweet.
