DOJ Sues Ferguson, Mo. To Force Reform

In the 18 months since the shooting death of Michael Brown, Ferguson, Mo.’s court and police systems continue to violate black residents’ rights, the Department of Justice says in a lawsuit filed against the city. Brown’s killing sparked the Black Lives Matter movement and led the federal government to examine Ferguson’s treatment of black residents. Federal investigators found that the city’s pervasively unfair treatment was rooted in its use of law enforcement to generate revenue, and failure to properly train and supervise law enforcement officers. DOJ and Ferguson officials reached an agreement on reforms, but earlier this week the city asked for several changes. In response, DOJ filed its lawsuit. The government “will take the necessary legal actions” to reform the city’s courts and policing practices, said Vanita Gupta, DOJ’s principal deputy assistant attorney general.
