Ellen Pao May Sue For Punitive Damages In Sex Discrimination Case

The Silicon Valley judge handling the case of Ellen Pao, who is suing her former employer, venture capital firm Kleiner Perkins, for gender discrimination, has ruled that she may sue for punitive damages as well as compensatory damages. “There is sufficient evidence from which a reasonable juror could conclude that Kleiner Perkins engaged in intentional gender discrimination,” Judge Harold E. Kahn wrote in his decision. Pao is asking for $16 million in lost wages for being denied promotions and then fired from the firm in 2012, after allegedly enduring years of discriminatory sexist behavior.
