Facebook Faces French Sanctions Over Privacy

Facebook has been given three months to update its data collection practices in France, or it will face sanctions in that country. The ultimatum was issued by a French commission, which said the social networking site’s practices of collecting information of internet users who visit Facebook but do not have accounts – tracking them with cookies – and its failure to properly inform users of the ways cookies are used for advertising purposes violate the French Data Protection Act. Facebook also doesn’t give users tools to prevent data collection for advertising purposes, the commission said, which “violates [users’] fundamental rights and interests, including their right to respect for private life.”
