Fiat Slammed With $105M Fine For Recall Failures

In the largest civil penalty ever imposed by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles will pay $105 million in fines for failing to complete 23 safety recalls covering more than 11 million vehicles. The consent order will force the company to buy back as many as 500,000 recalled vehicles, and submit to additional oversight of its safety practices. If any further violations are discovered, Fiat will owe an additional $15 million in penalties. Fiat Chrysler is currently recalling vehicles with defective suspensions that can cause drivers to lose control, as well as 1.59 million Jeeps with rear-mounted gas tanks, prone to catching fire in collisions.
