Houston Pastors Served With Subpoenas For Their Sermons

Lawyers for the city of Houston sparked a public outcry when they subpoenaed several local pastors, asking for copies of their recent sermons. The lawyers, working pro bono on behalf of the city, targeted pastors who had spokenout to their congregations against an equal rights ordinance approved by Houston’s City Council. The ordinance bans racial and sexual orientation discrimination by the city in employment, contracting, housing and public accommodations. A national conservative legal group has filed a motion objecting to the records request on First Amendment grounds. A reported comment by the Houston City Attorney suggests the city’s interest in the sermons had to do with determining whether people gathering names for a petition opposing the ordinance were aware of referendum rules.
