How Old Is Too Old For A Judge?

Pennsylvania voters will vote this spring on whether or not the mandatory retirement age for judges should be extended to 75. Supporters argue that extending the age limit would allow a longer tenure for experienced jurists. Opponents conflated the issue with the state Supreme Court’s recent scandals, in which pornographic emails between high court justices has led to one resignation, and prompted an investigation. “They should not serve a day longer, but they sure as heck shouldn’t receive the opportunity to serve five additional years,” state Sen. Anthony Williams (D) said.
