A first-person account of a conference about legal issues and 3D printing, hosted by the Benesch law firm. One message: People tend to overestimate what a new technology will do in two years, but underestimate what it will do in ten. Intellectual property issues were a hot-button issue. One speaker, an attorney from the host firm and the leader of its 3D printing legal group, compared the situation to that confronting the music industry with the advent of the Internet, when album sales plummeted. The presentations included some practical advice for keeping a grip on IP from the chief IP counsel of one of the icons of heavy manufacturing in the United States. This post may be the first time many in the IP world have seen the term “internal validation features,” but it probably won’t be the last.
