North Carolina Sues Gov’t Over Transgender Bathroom Law

North Carolina is accusing the U.S. Justice Department of “baseless and blatant overreach” in challenging the state’s law restricting transgender persons from using the restroom of the gender with which they identify. North Carolina was the first state to require transgender people to use restrooms that match the sex on their birth certificates. The Justice Department said the law was a civil rights violation and the state risked a federal lawsuit if it did not stop enforcing it this week. Instead, North Carolina filed suit, saying U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch is operating under a “radical reinterpretation” of federal civil rights law.
