Robot Lawyer Saves Drivers $4M In Parking Tickets

The “world’s first robot lawyer,” is equipped with knowledge of parking ticket appeals, and thus far has helped drivers in London and New York City contest 160,000 parking tickets with a 64 percent success rate in appeals, recouping more than $4 million. “[T]he people getting parking tickets are the most vulnerable in society,” said the robot’s creator Joshua Browder, a London native in his sophomore year at Stanford University. The robot, called DoNotPay, was deployed just 21 months ago. It works out whether an appeal is possible through a series of simple questions and guides users through the appeals process. Browder plans to expand his chatbot platforms to address flight delay compensation, help HIV positive people understand their rights and establish a guide for refugees navigating foreign legal systems.
