Russia Seeks To Influence U.S. Elections, Lawmakers Say

Two lawmakers with access to classified intelligence  said last week Russia appears to be “making a serious and concerted effort to influence the U.S. election.” Sen. Dianne Feinstein and Rep. Adam B. Schiff, California Democrats, and ranking members of the Senate and House intelligence committees respectively, said that the recent hack of the Democratic National Committee and other U.S. political entities were likely state-sponsored Russian acts. “At the least,” the lawmakers wrote in a joint statement, “this effort is intended to sow doubt about the security of our election and may well be intended to influence the outcomes. We believe that orders for the Russian intelligence agencies to conduct such actions would come only from very senior levels of the Russian government.” The Democrats’ direct language is a contrast to the more broad characterizations of the cyber intrusions used by the White House and U.S. intelligence agencies. The Obama administration has said it is waiting on the outcome of a formal FBI investigation.
