SCOTUS May Forgive McDonnell Corruption Charge

The Supreme Court heard arguments this week in the case of former Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell, who was convicted of corruption for accepting more than $175,000 in cash and gifts from a businessman in the state. The justices asked questions probing whether the favors McDonnell performed in exchange for the gifts and favors – arranging meetings and hosting and attending events – were enough to be considered illegal. “For better or worse, it puts at risk behavior that is common,” Justice Stephen Breyer said. He added that he feared the government’s position in the case could give prosecutors too much power against elected officials for what is, in some cases, normal behavior. McDonnell is facing a two-year prison sentence if the conviction is upheld.
