Survey: Dangerous Lack Of GC Successor Planning

A survey from legal recruiter BarkerGilmore and NYSE Governance Services finds a dramatic increase in the influence of the general counsel in the C-Suite. According to the survey, ten years ago only 50 percent of GCs were considered members of the executive team; now 90 percent are. At the same time, the survey found endemic failure to do formal succession planing for the general counsel position, even though a significant majority of CEOs and directors recognize that it should be a priority. The survey also identified four key areas where directors are now making demands on the general counsel and expect them to hone their expertise.
