Texas GOP Targets Power Of Liberal State Judges

Conservative Texans are looking to strip power from liberal-leaning Travis County judges who they believe have outsize influence in the state. The bills seek to dismantle the state’s Public Integrity Unit, an anti-corruption effort that has targeted Republicans like Tom DeLay and Kay Bailey Hutchison. The bills would also allow the state’s attorney general and supreme court chief justice – both Republicans – to appoint two jurists outside Travis County to sit with a Travis County judge in a panel that hears the opening stages of major lawsuits.
