Trump’s SCOTUS Noms: Different, Yet The Same

The list of potential Supreme Court nominees that President-elect Donald Trump put forward during his campaign is overwhelmingly white, male, and middle-aged. In that, they reflect traditional appointees to the Court, and differ from President Obama’s selections, Justices Sonia Sotomayor and Elena Kagan. But Trump’s picks would mix up the Court in another way – they are predominately from the middle of the country, and only half went to the nation’s top law schools. Every current Supreme Court justice went to either Harvard or Yale law school, though Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg ultimately got her degree from Columbia after transferring from Harvard. This USA Today article breaks down Trump’s potential picks, including key opinions and dissents that may shed light on their jurisprudence. Trump has said his goal is to “appoint justices who, like Justice Scalia, will protect our liberty with the highest regard for the Constitution.”
