Under Criticism, Uber Lawyer Cuts Fees In Half

The lead lawyer in an Uber drivers class action, whose proposed $84 million settlement with the company has been criticized as being inadequate and in particular for accepting terms that don’t address the core issue of worker classification, has offered to cut her firm’s share down to $11 million as a gesture of good faith. Shannon Liss-Riordan continued to defend the settlement, saying its benefits outweigh the risks of going to trial, and pointing out that the fee will compensate her, and her staff, for years of work. She also defended the contingency system itself, under which a 25 percent cut for the plaintiff firm is typical, pointing out this system allows people with no resources to pursue a case they otherwise could never bring, and noting that plaintiff firms – hers in particular – can, and do, lose expensive and time-consuming cases, in which case they get nothing. This latest development in the case comes in the context of the proposed settlement being criticized by some high profile California plaintiff attorneys, some of whom have peeled off clients for an alternative class action case against Uber.
