Was Al Capone Legal Document Swiped From File?

A 90-year old legal document signed by Al Capone is about to hit the auction block, but that comes as a shock to a former Florida court system historian. The document, related to a raid of Capone’s mansion around 1930, will be a part of the “Gangsters, Outlaws and Lawmen” auction of historical items. Bobby Livingston, executive vice president of Fine Books & Collections auction house, said it was not uncommon for duplicates of court documents to end up in private hands. But a local reporter reviewed court archives and found no original or duplicate. “If this is an original document that was filed with the court, it needs to be back in a court file and preserved for future generations,” Scott Silverman, a retired judge who served as the court system’s historian, told the Miami Herald.
