Amish Miners Face Off Against Labor Dept In Hard Hat Dispute

Workplace safety regulations in Pennsylvania mines have come in conflict with the strict dress code for practicing Amish miners, and one Republican lawmaker is heading up an effort to allow a religious exemption. The Department of Labor’s Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) requires all employees to wear hard hats to protect against head injuries, but rather than accede to the federal rules, at least six Amish workers have left a job at a surface mining site. The Amish dress code allows for traditional black and straw hats, but in the mines “We want to put our faith in God, not hard hats,” said Abe Byler, an Amish employee for Russell Stone Products in Grampian, Pa.
