Arson Conviction Won’t Be Reinstated

An appeals court has upheld a 2014 ruling that overturned a 1990 arson and murder conviction. Han Tak Lee, 8, served 24 years in prison he allegedly set in 1989. Lee’s daughter died in the fire. The Third District Court of Appeals agreed with the ruling, which found that Lee was convicted based on scientific theories about arson that have since been discredited. After years of appeals the Third Circuit granted a request for an independent review of evidence. That review found that expert testimony against Lee was based on “little more than superstition.” David Christine, the prosecutor who argued the case said he will appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court.
