InterContinental Hotels’ (IHG) online booking systems and other services were interrupted by a cyberattack on Sept. 5. IHG operates 17 hotel brands worldwide, with offices in Atlanta, Singapore and Shanghai. In a statement to the London Stock Exchange it said that its operations have been disrupted and people have been unable to reserve rooms online. It has notified authorities and put its own experts to work restoring systems and assisting hotel operators, which suggests a ransomware attack. In most such incidents, the attackers steal sensitive information before encryption, and use it later for extortion purposes.
