Having come from a position of primarily providing legal expertise, the CLO/GC is now a key figure in business strategy, overseeing a much broader scope of responsibilities. “A good way to think about the CLO’s changing role is to think of them as being responsible for overseeing and managing the legal governance, risk and compliance efforts for the enterprise. We refer to this as Legal GRC,” says Exterro’s Bobby Balachandran. That means that along with being responsible for a company’s legal operations, the CLO has a central role in insuring compliance in all aspects of operations, as well as addressing risk in the increasingly perilous area of data management.
