California Teacher Unions Suffer Major Blow At Hands Of Superior Court Judge

Lawyers for the Silicon Valley-based group Students Matter cleared a major hurdle in overturning what they deemed the “status quo” in education when a Los Angeles Superior Court judge ruled key protections for teachers in California are unconstitutional. The decision is a huge blow to unions, and a victory for the lawyers who argued current state laws governing layoffs, tenure and dismissals made it too easy for teachers to gain job protections that prevents inadequate educators from being replaced. If the ruling stands, California will need to create new rules on hiring and firing teachers, and the impact of the decision is likely to have a ripple effect nationwide. Both sides expect the case to reach the California Supreme Court.
