Companies Urged To Weigh In On Drone Rules

A client alert from Morrison & Foerster advises companies to consider how they might benefit from using drones, and to weigh in on the rule making process that will establish limits on their use. Proposed FAA rules for “small UAS” – that is unmanned aircraft systems whose vehicles weigh less then 55 pounds – are expected to issue soon. According to the client alert, they could be problematic for many industries, based on the nature of the exemptions that the FAA has already granted to one industry that has requested them: the movie industry. There the requirement is that drones fly at less than 400 feet and remain within the line of sight of the pilot. Such strictures, the authors say, would make drones useless for many anticipated industrial uses, such as pipeline inspection and monitoring of crops for industrial agricultural operations.
