Cyber Protection Tip: Voice Recognition Is Safer Than Passwords

This post from IT Security Guru points to research that finds 61 percent of fraud losses from account takeovers involve the call center. A remedy for this kind of fraud is to forget about using passwords or other unique customer information as keys to accessing the account. Instead, use voice recognition software. This involves taking a recording of the person and then creating a digital voiceprint, which is then matched to anyone trying to access the account, “either passively (as in, while the conversation is ongoing) or actively (as in, having to repeat a stock phrase before continuing).” This method comes with an ancillary benefit, according to the author: Voice biometrics can also help identify the fraudster, and possibly nail down a future court case.
