According to a 2017 survey, about half of all cybersecurity practitioners are solicited for a job opportunity at least weekly. Over a month’s time, just about all cybersecurity employees have one or more opportunities to leave their current position. The same survey found that 60 percent of information security professionals aren’t satisfied with their current positions. Their dissatisfaction often expresses itself as a demand for a raise, but at bottom it may have less to do with pay, which averages $116,000 annually, than other factors, such as anonymity, irrelevance, and “immeasurement,” which means failure to provide clear key performance indicators or other metrics to help employees determine how they are performing. Employers should also provide a clear path by which employees can see themselves sticking with their current employer for the long haul. The expectation is that by 2021 there will be 3.5 million open jobs for cybersecurity professionals, so existing cyber employees have plenty of leverage.
