Democratic AGs Look To Republican Legal Strategy

Ten current and incoming Democratic state attorneys general seem ready to take a page from the Republican playbook to counter initiatives from the Trump administration in court. New York’s Erich T. Schneiderman, Massachusetts’ Maura Healy, and Rep. Xavier Becerra, who was recently named as successor to California Attorney General Kamala Harris when she assumes her recently-won senate seat, have been particularly vocal in pledging to fight roll-backs of environmental, antitrust and financial regulations. Several have also said they stand ready to fight against changes to immigration law, and to combat the rash of hate crimes that have erupted since Trump’s November victory. The stiff state opposition would be a continuation of the current state of affairs, where conservative attorneys generals from Texas, Virginia, and Florida have sued the Obama administration dozens of times. Schneiderman told the New York Times, “Life just got a lot more exciting for those of us at a state level who are now the first line of defense.”
