“Distracted Working” Is A Hazard

The issue of distracted driving is getting more attention, and laws and policies addressing the issue are slowly taking hold. But another closely related issue is something of a sleeper. A post from Occupational Health & Safety magazine urges more attention to the issue of “distracted working,” especially in workplaces with heavy or potentially dangerous equipment, confined spaces, or where the work involves the safety of patrons (lifeguards, for example). The post includes some policy and guidance recommendations. One tip for employers: Keep it practical. Restrictions that are too broad and don’t recognize that some work situations are potentially far more dangerous than others are less likely to be taken seriously.
