Due Diligence Consultants Arrested In China

At the same time that enforcement of anti-corruption laws, including the U.S. Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, is getting more strict, Chinese authorities are criminalizing the kind of research that due diligence consultants working in China have been doing to address that risk. One consultant, a British national who reportedly was doing FCPA due diligence for GlaxoSmithKline, recently appeared on Chinese television, wearing handcuffs and an orange jumpsuit. He confessed and apologized, for having illegally acquired personal information.
