Eastern Block Women Say Sex Was Better Under Communism

Along with their gray apartment buildings, long lines for groceries and heavy-handed government snooping, women under Eastern European Communism had better sex, according to professor and author Kristen R. Ghodsee, in a New York Times oped. She cites anecdotal evidence as well as one sociological study that purported to keep score on the matter, by interviewing both East German and West German women shortly after the wall came down. Significant representation in the workforce, generous maternity leave and free child care are said to be among the contributing factors. An older Bulgarian woman, interviewed by Ghodsee, said that although “some things were bad during that time,” her life in certain respects was better than her daughter’s is now. “After my divorce, I had my job and my salary, and I didn’t need a man to support me,” she says. Now, she adds, all her daughter does is work. “When she comes home at night she is too tired to be with her husband. But it doesn’t matter, because he is tired, too. They sit together in front of the television like zombies. When I was her age, we had much more fun.”
