Employee Right To Time Off For Voting?

Employees may be entitled to time off in order to vote, but the regulatons vary widely from state to state. In Texas, employers must allow time off to vote with no loss of pay if polls are not open for two consecutive hours outside the employee’s work day, but in West Virginia an employee can request up to three hours off for voting without calling it leave and with no pay reduction – if the employee does not have at least three hours before or after work in which to vote. In this post from Steptoe & Johnson, all employers are advised to make sure they are up on the law in whatever venues they operate. Meanwhile there is evidence that while two or even three hours off work might be enough time if you vote in a nice middle class venue, in some predominately Hispanic or black precincts that may not do it.
