EPA Head Promised “New Day” For Pesticides, Documents Reveal

Internal documents obtained by the New York Times reveal promises that Scott Pruitt, head of the EPA, made to ag industry executives the week before his agency rejected its own scientists’ advice to ban a pesticide. This is a “new day, a new future” he told industry execs who want to keep using the pesticide chlorpyrifos, widely used on on apples, oranges, strawberries and other fruits even though it was barred from residential use in 2000. It has been linked to lower I.Q.s and developmental problems among agricultural workers and their children. According to an EPA spokeswoman,  the agency is examining “scientific concerns with the methodology used by the previous administration,” and will accede to Dow Chemical’s request that it not be banned pending the result of further studies.
