Facebook’s Hiring Process Blocks Diversity

Former recruiters to Facebook say the tech giant’s multi-layered hiring process gives a small committee of high-ranking engineers veto power over promising candidates, which has hindered efforts to bring more female, black, and Latino software engineers aboard. The engineering leaders making the final decision were almost all white or Asian men, reports the Seattle Times, and they “often assessed candidates on traditional metrics like where they attended college, whether they had worked at a top tech firm, or whether current Facebook employees could vouch for them.” The Times credited former recruiters to the company, who asked not to be identified. From 2015 to 2016, the proportion of women working in tech at Facebook grew by just one percent, and the proportion of black and Latino tech workers remained flat at one and three percent, respectively.
