First Year Lawyer Pay “Flat,” at $160K

You can count on a $160,000 starting salary as a first-year lawyer, according to statistics from the National Association for Law Placement, which is about the same as the previous year – that is, if you go to work at a large firm in one of a few select markets. About 40 percent of the largest law firms reported paying new associates that amount, up from 27 percent of the same law firms reporting that benchmark figure in 2014. But much depends on region. That figure is the norm in New York, but only about 60 percent of law firms hit that mark in Los Angeles and Washington, down from the 90 percent that reported they paid new lawyers that much in 2009, and the national median was considerably less.
