Flurry Of Labor Laws Moving Through State Legislatures

For the second month in a row, February saw hundreds of labor and employment bills being either introduced or addressed in state legislatures. This survey of the national scene, from the Littler law firm, finds that New York and Tennessee had the most activity, followed by Texas, Illinois and Oklahoma, but developments in many states are worth noting. Pending bills favor employers on a number of fronts, including the question of franchisor-franchisee joint employment and “right to work,” while favoring employees on several others, including minimum wage, with more than 40 bills pending in more than 20 states, sick leave, and variations on “ban-the box.” There’s movement on wage “transparency” in at least nine states.
