Former Managing Partner Confirmed As Director of the USPTO

Andrei Iancu, who has been serving as the managing partner of Irell & Manella LLP, was confirmed by the Senate to become Under Secretary of Commerce for Intellectual Property and Director of the United States Patent and Trademark Office. The confirmation vote was unanimous. Iancu was originally nominated in August 2017, and had his hearing before the Senate Judiciary Committee three months later. He represented clients in various technological fields while at Irell & Manella – genetic testing, medical devices, therapeutics, telephony, video game systems – and secured large settlements for major corporations, including $250 million from Verizon for TiVo Corporation in 2012. Joe Matal, who has been in charge at the USPTO, is expected to become the next Deputy Under Secretary of Commerce for Intellectual Property and Deputy Director of the United States Patent and Trademark Office.
