FTC Antitrust Action In Healthcare On The Rise

The healthcare industry’s consolidation efforts are being closely monitored by the FTC. Its recent antitrust case preventing an Idaho hospital system from acquiring an independent doctor group is the latest in a string of legal victories that have thwarted acquisition activity by large healthcare systems. The FTC argued in the Idaho case that if St. Luke Health System was allowed to acquire the 40-doctor Saltzer Medical Group, it would reduce competition, allow the provider to negotiate higher payments from health plans, and result in increased insurance costs for consumers.
