FTC Clarifies Its Data Security Requirements

The Federal Trade Commission is making a concerted effort to clarify what it expects from companies with regard to security protocols for storing and processing consumers’ personal information. The initiative began in March with the rollout of the agency’s “Start with Security” initiative, followed by a guidance on June 30. Now it has scheduled a series of seminars, starting with one in San Francisco on September 9. The guidance document draws what it considers to be lessons from 54 data security enforcement actions the Commission has brought since 2001.
