FTC, Claiming No Prejudgment, Will Investigate Trolls

A statement from an FTC official suggests the agency will avoid prejudging patent assertion entities, pejoratively known as patent trolls, as it opens an investigation that could lay groundwork for antitrust enforcement. The decision to open the investigation was approved in a 4 to 0 vote.  The FTC said it would subpoena about 25 companies that buy and sell patents and 15 other companies that manufacture devices or write software.
