A graphic illustration called the World’s Biggest Data Breaches & Hacks is enough to give you the willies if you’re a chief legal officer. They’re shown as circles of varying sizes, all clickable for some background. The biggest of all is no surprise, it’s Facebook with the data of 420,000 users exposed because they were sitting on a server with no password protections in place, which made them accessible to anyone with an internet connection. Second place? An adult dating and entertainment company called Friend Finder Network in which the identities and sexual preferences of 412,00 people were revealed, including whether they were interested in an extra-marital affair. The most serious? Arguably that of an enterprise called Court Ventures, because it was a supposedly kosher enterprise that made a business of selling data to identity thieves. Experian bought Court Ventures, which it described on its website as an aggregator that repackages and resells electronically available public records data “obtained from more than 1,400 state and county sources,” in 2012. Experian told a Congressional committee investigating the data brokerage industry that it was unaware of its subsidiary’s deal with the web site Superget.info, an identity theft service whose administrators were based in Vietnam. Experian eventually worked with the Secret Service to get an indictment against Vietnamese national Hieu Minh Ngo.
