‘Hasty,’ ‘Angry’ Judge Gets Disciplinary Probation

A judge who was accused of requiring defendants to pay unwarranted fees, including a $25,000 bond for a mother’s child-seat violation, has been placed on disciplinary probation. Judge Amanda Sammons acknowledged her temperament issues, saying she was “too hasty to judge and too quick to be angry before,” but said she is now a “more temperate and patient person.” However, Sammons did not admit fault. Complaints against Sammons included the astronomical bond for a seat belt violation; requiring defendants to pay fees for court-appointed counsel even when they retained private counsel; ordering drug tests on individuals in her court without probable cause; and issuing ex parte orders that took two children away from their custodial parent.
