IMDb Sues Over Law Hiding Actors Ages

IMDb.com, an online database of movie industry information, is suing the state of California over a law that would prevent it from posting the ages of entertainment figures. The law was passed by proponents who said posting the ages of actors, producers, directors and others may contribute to ageism. However, IMDb has countered that it believes the measure violates free speech rights under the Constitution. The law requires IMDb to remove the age of anyone listed on the site, if they request the removal of that information. Actors have said they fear being passed over for roles because of their age, with female actors in particular citing it as a career impediment. “IMDb shares the worthy goal of preventing age discrimination,” the lawsuit states, “But AB 1687 is an unconstitutional law that does not advance, much less achieve, that goal.”
