In Memorium: Shirley Hufstedler, Longtime Morrison & Foerster Senior of Counsel

Morrison & Foerster shares the sad news that long time senior of counsel Shirley Hufstedler passed away peacefully this morning in Southern California. Among her accomplishments, Ms. Hufstedler became the first ever Secretary of Education under President Jimmy Carter in 1979, after having been previously appointed by President Lyndon Johnson to the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. Shirley Hufstedler was one of the first ever women to graduate from Stanford law school, and was top of her class in 1949 along with husband Seth. Shirley and her husband Seth were two of the founders of the Stanford Law Review. The firm was proud to have Shirley as a colleague for the last 20 years. She leaves behind Seth as well as their one son and multiple grandchildren.
