Jury Selection Using The Internet And Social Media

Beginning with the premise that potential jurors may not reveal their biases and personal experiences during voir dire, an article in Trial Magazine article entitled “Screening the Jury Pool,” by Robins Kaplan attorney Brandon E. Vaughn, looks at other avenues for researching jurors involving internet search and data from social media. A lot of this research can be done by individual non-specialist researchers, but there are commercial search tools that probe more deeply, and in some cases may even be able to address the internet alias issue. The author also looks at ethical issues involved, as well as limits on jury research that may imposed by bar associations, court orders or local rules.
